Ffrom bloody plays in Ancient Greece to Stephen King novels, we have been enjoying the thrill of horror for thousands of years. But why do we find it so pleasurable to give ourselves a good fright? This Very Short Introduction delves into the darkest corners of this fascination genre, exploring films, fiction, and plays to unlock the secrets of why horror stories disturb us, and how society responds to representations of the gruesome and taboo. Analysing the ways horror has been used throughout history to articulate contemporary fears, it considers the continuing evolution of the genre today, from romantic vampires to brutal internet phenomena, and pushes us to question the terrifying capacity of human nature.
