Why and how do myths arise? What is their function? What meanings do they convey? In this Very Short Introduction Robert A. Segal draws on theories such as Freud, Campbell and Levi-Strauss to answer these questions, and considers theories drawn from fields including psychology, sociology, politics, anthropology, philosophy, and literary criticism. In this new edition, Segal looks toward the future study of myth and discusses the implications of the myth of Gaia for the revival of myth, and the differences between myth and storytelling.
Robert A. Segal is Sixth Century Chair in Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. He received his PhD in Religion from Princeton University and taught in the US for many years before relocating to the UK in 1994.
