'The whispering voice was very clear, horrible, too, beyond all she had ever known: "They are roaring in the Forest further out... and I... must go and see"'
From one of the greatest authors of twentieth-century weird fiction come four of the very best strange stories ever written: "The Willows", "Ancient Sorceries", "The Wendigo" and "The Man Whom the Trees Loved".
Tightly wrought and deliciously suspenseful, Blackwood's novellas are quintessentially weird, pitching the reader into an uncanny space where the sublime forces of primordial Nature still dominate and in which the limits of the senses are uncertain. These are tales of powers beyond the frayed edges of human experience - tales which tug at the mind, and which prove as unsettling today as they first did a century ago.
Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was a prolific English writer of short stories and novels, as well as a consistent contributor to radio and early television. His regular appearances reading his weird fiction and ghost stories for these platforms garnered him the epither "The Ghost Man".
Xavier Aldana Reyes is Reader in English Literature and Film at Manchester Metropolitan University and a member of the Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies.
